Compassion at
Mission Bell
At Mission Bell we base our decisions on our core values of Stewardship, Relationship, and Contribution.
Our primary focus for donations is to help support people in direct need of the basics of life. As a consequence most of our charitable contributions go to people out of the country – and are both financial and “hands-on”. Here are a few of the people and organizations that Mission Bell supports: |

La Casa Trips
For the last 12 years, Mission Bell and many of our employees have been building very small homes just outside of Tijuana, Mexico. We call these our LA CASA TRIPS. These homes are built for some of the poorest families we have ever seen. |

Samaritan's Purse
We support Samaritan’s Purse who provides disaster relief to people all over the world. This Christian organization run by Franklin Graham, comes to the aid of adults and children in need after natural disasters as well as people who are impacted by poverty and disease worldwide.
Back in November we collected small presents from the Mission Bell Team to include in shoeboxes that the Management Team wrapped and sent to Samaritan’s Purse Operation Christmas Child. Together with all the goodies, we included a picture of the MB Team and a business card so that each child would know who their gift was coming from. I’m excited to tell you that in the last week we have received two Thank You letters from people in the Philippines whose lives were touched by our gifts. The first came from the mother of 3-year old Alwen pictured above. She writes: “Thank you very much for your kindness. May God bless you always.”
We also received a note of thanks from Pastor Elridio Espinosa, the pastor of the church that distributed the gifts to children in their community. Their area was devastated by the eruption of the Mount Pinatubo volcano in June of 1991 that produced the second largest terrestrial eruption of the 20th century. As a result of the devastation to farms, houses and other sources of income, they are continuing to recover slowly. He writes: Your gifts were “a big help for all the children who received the shoeboxes. Almost all of them cried out with shouted praise to the Lord when they opened their boxes. My heart was really touched because of your sacrifice for us.” While the gifts did not represent a sacrifice for us, it is good to know that they were received and appreciated. It reminds me of how very much we have to be thankful for.

City Team Ministries
City Team mainly ministers to the homeless and helpless in the Bay Area. Our donations usually consist of providing Millwork and Casework as their needs come up.
However, City Team also ministers internationally, through its arm called "New Generations." Our recent involvement with the “Water of Life” project is one of those international projects. Pictured here is John Scianna, Pete Rivera and Gregg Scianna in front of the crate the Mission Bell Team made to ship the “Water of Life” water treatment system to Africa.
The 2003 U.N. Task Force on Water and Sanitation stated that 1.2 billion people lack access to safe drinking water and that 2.3 billion people each year suffer from diseases linked to water. The task force also stated that 2.2 million people, 90% of them children under 5, die each year from water-borne illnesses. In fact, water-borne diseases are the #1 cause of death in the world. Lack of access to safe water is accepted in many villages throughout the world because there is no viable alternative.
A Silicon Valley inventor has developed a device that kills the disease-causing bacteria and viruses in water and formed a company (Water of Life) to deploy it. The unit kills in excess of 99.9997% of bacteria and 99.99998% of viruses at a flow rate of 500 gallons per hour, enough to provide 2 gallons per day to 1,000 to 2,000 villagers. The device is also designed so it does not require any parts requiring constant replacement ('consumables') like carbon filters. In the last year, Water of Life has worked to build a product around the technology and the first ten production units were delivered on October 26, 2007.
Water of Life has joined with CityTeam to conduct field trials of both the device and approaches to deploying it. CityTeam developed several business and ministry models that emphasize local ownership of the system. CityTeam estimates that the water will cost villagers about 0.5¢ per gallon and a year's supply will cost about the equivalent of 2 - 3 days earnings. Since the villagers should have reduced medical expenses and higher productivity, this cost should be more than recovered over a year.
CityTeam and its international partners have identified 2 villages in West Africa and 4 in the Horn of Africa for the field tests. The first units were shipped in mid-November, in crates supplied by Mission Bell, to West Africa and in December to the Horn of Africa.

The pictures above illustrate the reaction of the people who are benefiting from the 500 gallons of water per day that these systems provide each of these villages. It’s GREAT NEWS to know that our contributions are making a difference in the lives of those who are less fortunate.

Heritage Home Kitchen Project
For example, City Team Ministries owns and manages a special home in San Jose for unmarried, pregnant women who elect to give birth. The home is a renovated Victorian era structure that now has a brand new kitchen. Mission Bell donated its services designing, manufacturing and installing the cabinets and kitchen work areas to make it usable for meal preparation.

Sacramento Childrens Home
For well over a century, the Sacramento Children's Home has provided thousands of children a safe place to call home. A non-profit agency, SCH works with abused and neglected children and with families to stop abuse early. Support from the community makes them strong.
Mission Bell recently teamed with DPR Construction to help build the new Pat Anderson Education Center at the Sacramento Childrens Home. The plastic laminate cabinets designed, crafted and installed by Mission Bell now serve the emotionally troubled and mentally ill children from kindergarten through high school. The new Pat Anderson Education Center has space for 72 students. The dual emphasis on academics and therapy helps students develop the skills necessary to be successful in their neighborhood schools.

PAWS
Mission Bell recently teamed with Anshen+Allen Architects and DPR Construction to compete in designing and building an “urban cat dwelling” for the recent Auction and Fundraiser for PAWS. PAWS is a charitable organization that reaches into the lives of low-income, HIV/AIDS and disabled clients by providing financial resources for food and veterinary care for pets; and by offering volunteer support, fostering and critical animal care when needed.
Not only did Mission Bell’s very own, John Scianna, team with some of our business partners, but he helped them steal the show! Our “Kitty in the City” entry won 1st place and brought in $7600 for PAWS.
John suggested ‘green’ materials, and natural staining techniques that give this cat habitat real appeal. The sophisticated bamboo exterior, angular forms and abstract cutouts enhance the contemporary, urban aesthetic while colorful felt interiors, ledges, and a central scratching post offer playful and functional features for the feline friend. What’s more, the modular design allows it to be adjusted and reconfigured into four different configurations. Pretty cool!
